The Place

Located in the south of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula, Dubai is home to the largest population of all the emirates. With its unique combination of flat sandy desert and picturesque mountains surrounding this city, plus the widespread use of English as a preferred language, Dubai is not only a hugely popular tourist destination, but also a favourite location for expats.

The second largest emirate has emerged as the business hub of the UAE, with business emanating not only from the oil rich territory but also from tourism, real estate and financial services. Dubai has become the destination for the fastest, biggest, tallest, largest and highest – a prime example being the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, which resides as the masterpiece of the city.

The Economy

With one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, and no income or capital gains tax, Dubai has a formidable economy on which to base its variety of businesses.

Whilst the oil industry was the foundation of Dubai’s economy, revenues from oil and natural gas currently contribute less than 6% of the emirate’s total revenues – in fact, real estate, construction, trade and financial services are far more key players towards the economy.

Dubai is also a centre for information technology and finance industries: there are several industry-specific zones to accommodate them, such as Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City, which are home to major firms such as IBM, Microsoft, CNN, Reuters and Sky News, amongst many others.

The Lifestyle

Dubai offers a lifestyle like no other, with a unique heritage, safe environment, tropical climate, vibrant nightlife, sandy beaches and countless leisure activities for all tastes, making tourism a prominent venture here.

Despite religious beliefs directing the rest of the emirates towards a more sedated way of life, by contrast Dubai stands out as an extraordinarily vibrant and diverse culture, whilst still keeping to the rich traditions of the UAE in general.

There are areas of Dubai that are very heavily anglicised simply due to the large British expatriate population, with Western food, clothing, language and etiquette merging with the traditional Arabic equivalents, creating a kaleidoscope of cultures in one city.

Meanwhile, there is rarely a shortage of entertainment and sporting events to attend in Dubai, with many major music performers and film and music festivals being commonplace in events listings.

The Prospects

With the booming economy in Dubai combined with the many industrial zones that give priority to financial and retail industries, there is no shortage of opportunities for those who wish to embark on a financial career in this exciting environment.

Meanwhile, the anglicised areas and culture of the city heavily attracts not only tourists but also a huge number of British expatriates who choose the location for its diversity, yet familiarity.
